It’s finally come to an end, Smash Ultimate is here and since its release on December 7th it has taken over the local scene and it’s given us all a fresh game to start off with. Gone is the knowledge and upper hand the veteran players had over the new, for the first time it’s an even playing field as everyone learns new characters as well as try to find out what has changed with mains.
But with all this, we take some time to recognise the top players in the smash Launceston scene. From brawl veterans such as Trucks, Chins and Twitch to newer competitive players like Kharn, Gand Laf and NZMGOW, we here at Down Tilt have correlated data from 4 years worth of tournaments.
100’s of tournaments, 1000+ matches and a combined total of over 3000+ hours on the tournament Wii U’s alone! It has been a great 4 years and we thank every one of the 80+ unique players who at one point competed in Launceston.
We hope to see some of you return for Ultimate and we thank the ones who continue to play. From all of us here at Down Tilt.

At the end of 2017 we signed on our first sponsored player for Down Tilt. We welcomed Pierce "PAZX" Purcell into the fold and signed him on to not only help ourselves but help him achieve his goals in Smash 4.
We saw something special in Pierce, he not only conducted himself professionally but also in a way that we believed would be of great benefit to the Australian smash scene. So with passion and pride on his side we signed him on for his tour of America where he attended Poi Poundaz in Hawaii, Genesis 5 in California and Evo Japan in Japan (obviously).

Over the course of his contract we achieved many things together and have decided that from the 1st of July 2018 we will be continuing our partnership as the release of Smash Ultimate gets closer.

Born from a love of the competitive Smash scene in Launceston and fuelled by a drive to give the local scene the competition it deserves, Down Tilt is the brain child of company founder Chris Baron and local tournament organiser Max Connell.
Local players MaxKiNG, Gand Laf, Cap Supreme and Gerald compete in Dragonball FIghterZ.
Chris' history in the competitive scene comes from his early involvement in the Super Smash Bros Brawl scene that was run out of the local high school hall as well as an internet cafe. Taking some time off Chris eventually met Max at a new event run at the university and after seeing how it was run and seeing the player demand for more events outside of the uni calendar decided to team up and create Smash at GUF here in Launceston.
From there in 2015, Smash at GUF has been the premiere fighting game community in Launceston. Expanding into other games as well such as Melee, Brawl, SFV and most recently Dragonball FighterZ.
It's now 2018 and the community is still meeting every Thursday at GUF in Launceston. We have been through many trials such as players coming and going, new venue shifts, new owners taking over GUF and more. But we are here and we intend to stay as we get closer to the next generation of Smash with Ultimate due out this December.
