So some things have been going on here at Salty Studios, which I am very excited to share, but yet again we got to hold it off just a little bit till the final pieces are in place. It's very close though, I promise, but there is something I have wanted to discuss of late and that is people's "negative" response to Amazon to Australia.
With Amazon comes one of the world's, if not THE world's, largest online retailer and alot of Australian businesses are saying it's the end of for retail in Australia as we know it. In all honesty though, there is one simple answer: providing a better service. And this works in video games to, I tell our guys that when it comes to making our games we need to do service and execution better than anyone else! or we are in trouble.
A good example is one I had recently with a friend of mine, he wanted to buy a game on steam but didn't want to buy it cause he was a tight ass and wanted to play with us. So he pirated it, day one bam is playing with us. The devs did a day one patch to fix up some slight errors in gameplay and all was good, except my mate.
See we got it all through steam meaning patches and all that were done instantly and even downloaded when we where away from the computer. But my friend had to go find an all new torrent which would allow him to replay the game. So as of now 3 of my friends and I have download this 10gb and a 1.3gb patch. My other friend had to download the orignial 10gb and the full game again with the crack that applied the patch bringing him up to 21.3gb downloaded total.
Now the devs went on to fix it a few more times, we got small patches and my pirate friend had to keep finding new downloads from places with cracks and patches. In the end he sucked it up and bought it because the developer was so keen on getting their game done well and through a good service like steam, my pirate matey decided it was just easier.
The same will work with Amazon, yes the prices are good but if a store offered it to me on the day IN STOCK and not that much more expensive I would buy it then and there for convienece. One big Aussie retailer has come out and said they will price match Amazon, which is a great move, now if you have everything they have IN STOCK and ready to go, you'll have my sale because not only am I getting the good price but I can have it then and there as well.
And that's how games should work, provide a good service and an excellent way of keeping gamers happy and the fans will come and even better they will stay.
